Trypoxylon attenuatum
Slender Wood Borer Wasp
HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Aculeata > Crabronidae > Crabroninae [BWARS: Larrinae]
A relatively small (7-10mm body length), elongate, black solitary wasp that can be found in a wide variety of habitats where they can catch small spiders to stock their nest chambers that are usually made within hollow stems. The species is fairly common and widespread, particularly across the south of the country, and can be seen from May to September.
There are four other very similar Trypoxylon species and, consequently, the identification of this particular specimen is likely rather than certain as a positive id can only be assured by microscopic examination. However, Trypoxylon attenuatum has a much narrower first abdominal segment than the other species, which is a good visual indicator.
