Nomada goodeniana

Gooden's Nomad Bee

HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Aculeata > APOIDEA > Apidae

One of two common, largish cleptoparasitic nomada bees with a black and yellow abdomen. It can be separated from the other, Nomada marshamella, by the complete yellow band across tergite 2 and yellow rather than orange tegulae. Males look similar to females, but have partially darkened antennal flagella and a patch of dense golden hairs at the base of the hind femora. Nomada goodeniana is a widespread and relatively common species that can be seen from April to June in variety of open or wooded habitats. The primary hosts are Andrena nigroaenea, Andrena pubescens and Andrena thoracica.
